Ever stumbled upon the realization that adulthood isn't quite the well-oiled machine we once imagined? It's more like patching up an old farm tractor with a bit of duct tape and a whole lot of hope. Just when things are rolling smoothly, life seems to toss a hay bale in your path. Or, as my Uncle Bert might call it, sheer stubbornness.
Ruth Codd’s story could snugly fit into a twisted fairytale. After injuring her leg playing football (or soccer, as some call it), she faced complications that felt as if amateurs were handling her case, much like my first attempt at making lefse. Lefse, for the uninitiated, is essentially a Scandinavian flatbread that’s like a tortilla and a pancake had a sugary baby. (And yes, it definitely takes practice.)
After enduring years of pain, Ruth chose to have her second leg amputated. But she’s not slowing down one bit. Her story reminds me of my Aunt Mabel. After her third hip replacement, a process that'd make anyone question the so-called joys of aging, she's bustling about like a Viking leading the church's lutefisk supper, talking about the importance of having sturdy kitchens and upstairs bedrooms. Ah, the wisdom found in old Norwegian Lutheran basements! And if you've ever been to Wisconsin, you’ll know there’s always a feast waiting after every sermon.
Back at her parents' house, Ruth spends her time making TikTok videos with humor as dry as last year’s hay. Humor might not fix a broken tractor, but it sure makes things more entertaining. Whether she's catching up with family or planning her next big leap on screen, Ruth carries a spirit much like a determined homesteader, declaring she's "pretty unstoppable."
Recently, she even played a Viking warrior in "Phlegma the Fierce" (no connection to anything phlegmy, mind you). Breathing new life into a character whose identity isn’t tied to physical limitations, Ruth’s story makes me realize that maybe adulthood isn't about having everything figured out. It's more about adapting, even if that means using crutches. Her life feels like those late-night kitchen table gatherings, where tales of grit and laughter stretch into the small hours, mixing wisdom with humor.
Reflecting on Ruth and Aunt Mabel's stories, I reckon life isn't about smooth roads; it's about keeping on keeping on. Maybe being knocked down isn't half as troubling as getting right back up and finding a way to laugh amid the chaos. Isn’t that a comforting thought? Perhaps that's adulthood in a nutshell: like gathering for Friday fish fry at the communal hall, where everyone knows your business but loves you anyway.
(For those who didn't grow up in small-town America, a Friday fish fry is practically sacred. There's more fried fish and tartar sauce than anyone would need, but that's beside the point.)
So when life tosses a hay bale your way, or maybe a few wrenches and a rainstorm for good measure, it’s all about how you respond. Sure, you might groan a little (or a lot), but you adjust your course, grab those metaphorical crutches, and keep moving forward. Whether it's Aunt Mabel with her new hips or Ruth with her renewed spirit, there’s something undeniable about the mix of stubbornness and humor that keeps us all going.
Maybe adulthood isn’t a well-tuned machine. It’s more a patchwork of stories, people, and maybe some terribly fried fish. But there's beauty in the chaos and comfort in knowing we’re all just trying to keep this tractor called life running, with duct tape, hope, and a good dose of humor.
