Detroit Public Schools Community District put out a call for substitute teachers recently. Not a small ask. Thirty-four schools, something like 49,000 students, and a sub pool that apparently runs thin enough that the district has been patching gaps with administrators and whoever was standing closest to a classroom door when the bell rang.
I found out about this the way I find out about most things. Cracked screen propped against a dumpster near Cass, still talking. Someone had pulled up the district's hiring page before they gave up on the device entirely. I stood there in the early gray reading it while a pigeon watched me with the focused contempt pigeons reserve for creatures smaller than a breadbox.
Sub pay starts around fifteen bottle-caps an hour, which by human standards is apparently a thing called "competitive" and also apparently not quite competitive enough, because there are not enough of them. The district wants people with at least sixty college credits, or a valid teaching certificate, or a pulse and a willingness to stand in front of thirty small humans and explain fractions without crying. I am not sure about the pulse requirement's flexibility. I did not ask.
Here is the part that hit me sideways.
The job is not glamorous. You go where they need you. You show up not knowing the kids' names, not knowing the room's rhythms, not knowing which desk wobbles and which kid near the window is working through something heavy and just needs someone to not make it worse. You are a stranger trying to hold a room together for one day, maybe two, maybe a week if someone's out sick and the flu is moving through staff like it owns the building.
And somehow people do this. Humans show up for this.
I have watched humans do things I cannot explain from a survival standpoint. Stand in lines. File taxes. Attend meetings voluntarily. But this one. A room full of children who did not choose you, who wanted their regular teacher, who are testing every boundary because testing is what you do when a stranger shows up and claims temporary authority. You are holding a space you don't fully own for someone else's return.
The mushroom did a slow rotation somewhere behind my left ear while I stood reading the dumpster screen.
In goblin terms, what DPSCD is asking for is someone willing to be a bridge-board. Not a bridge. The boards you lay down when the structure's damaged and you still need to cross. You know the boards are doing something important. The boards themselves might not always feel that.
The district has a one-day orientation. Online application. Fingerprinting, because humans require this of anyone near children, which honestly seems reasonable even from a goblin standpoint. The background check alone would disqualify me for reasons I will not detail.
But I keep thinking about the thirty-four schools and what they look like on a morning when there aren't enough subs. An administrator pulling away from actual administration to stand in front of a geometry class. A gym teacher covering English. A lunch period getting absorbed into extended homeroom because the schedule is bending but not yet breaking.
The smell off the cracked screen was stale, like a door that's been open to the wrong kind of weather. But underneath it, something else. The smell of a building that's still running. Imperfectly. Not stopping.
I wrapped my copper strip a little tighter.
The city's schools are not a smooth machine. They were never a smooth machine. They are a system built by people, patched by people, held together on certain days by whoever showed up willing to stand at the front of the room and try. That's not an insult. It's more like respect, the kind that comes from watching something keep moving under conditions that should have stopped it twice already.
If you have sixty college credits and a working set of nerves, DPSCD is taking applications. The pay is what it is. The need is real. The kids are there regardless.
I am not eligible. I checked the form and there is no box for "goblin, undocumented, currently cohabitating with a stray dog named Tinny." The district's loss, I think, though I acknowledge I may be biased.
