The air smells like last night's Chinese takeout and the exhaust from the bus that always seems to be running late, but then I catch a whiff of something else, something that makes me think of the river after a storm, all muddy and full of things that got loose. No, wait, it's not the river, it's the smell of a freshly opened can of beans, the kind that comes with a tiny key to unlock the lid, which is weird because I don't remember eating beans recently, unless... unless it's the key in my pocket trying to tell me something. Yeah, that's it, the key is trying to tell me something, and I think I'm starting to listen.

(What you don't see is what you get, or something like that, the city is always trying to tell you something, you just have to be small enough to hear it.)

I was digging through my pockets, the ones that collect stuff I don't remember picking up, like a magpie on a mission from the metal gods. For two months, they'd been full of the same handful of bent nails, three bottle caps that smelled like last week's dinner, and a single sock I'm pretty sure belonged to someone who needed it more than me. It was like my pockets had gone dormant, like the river in winter when it's all ice and no flow.

Then, three days ago, I woke up and there was a key in there. A real key, brass, could open something, maybe a door, maybe a can of beans. And a red button I found somewhere, it makes a satisfying click when you press it, like the sound of a well-fed something large and grumpy. Suddenly, my pockets are hungry again, like Tinny when she smells a rat.

At first, I thought it was the weather, you know, like when the humidity changes and your pocket-fabric loosens up, or maybe a bus route shifted and I was walking through a different kind of air. But then I started overhearing humans on the benches near the library, all of them saying the same thing in different words: something moved in the sky and now everything feels different. They call it Jupiter, Leo, and Cancer, like these are neighborhoods or buildings or maybe old kings who died and became lights.

The big one, Jupiter, it rules Sagittarius, which I think means a kind of human, the kind that wants to go somewhere always, like the ones on the bus platform tapping their feet like the ground is too slow for them. I know that kind, they're always in a hurry, like a goblin running from something bigger than itself. The sky-changers say Jupiter spent a long time in a slow place called Cancer, where it asked Sagittarius-humans to sit still and go inward and tend to things close to home. I know what that feels like, it's like winter under the bridge, when the river is talking too loud and you don't have enough socks.

But the humans say Jupiter left Cancer, it went into Leo, a warm place, a fire place, a place built for speed and showing what you've got. And I felt it before I heard them say it, my pockets woke up, the key appeared, the compass in my coat did a half-turn for the first time in weeks, like it remembered it was supposed to point somewhere. It was like the whole city was saying, "Hey, goblin, it's time to move."

The sky-changers also say the beginning of July has hard stuff in it first, something about old wounds around being seen, around being too much or not enough. I know that one too, being three feet tall in a city made for people who are not three feet tall means you spend a lot of time being exactly the wrong size. Too small to be taken seriously, too visible to be ignored. The sky-changers call it Jupiter squaring Chiron, I call it Tuesday, because that's what it feels like, just another day of being a goblin in a human world.

But they say you have to do the hard part first, you can't skip to the confident stuff, the confidence later only works if you looked at the old hurt first. I wrapped my copper strip a little tighter when I heard that, because I've been running from the old hurt for a while now, and maybe the sky is telling me it's time to stop running and just look at it. It's like when you follow a smell in the city, you have to see where it takes you, even if it's not where you wanted to go.

There's a day coming, the 29th, where the big warm sky-thing meets itself in Leo, the humans say it's the payoff, doors open, confidence finds traction. The Full Moon that same night asks you to share what you got instead of hoarding it, like a goblin sharing his bridge with a stray dog. I don't know about doors opening for a goblin with no papers and a compass that might be broken, but I know about sharing, I've been sharing my life with Tinny, and she's been sharing her wisdom with me.

The whole month is a return to form, the sky-changers say it, my pockets say it, the key in my left pocket says it, whatever was stuck is unstuck, whatever was dormant is waking up. July is asking me to meet it with everything I've got, not just the parts that come easy, like a goblin walking into a lit room for the first time and deciding not to flinch. I think I'm ready, I think I can do it, I think I can be more than just a goblin with a compass that points somewhere and a pocket full of bent nails.

I'm ready to see what's on the other side of the bridge, I'm ready to follow the smell of the city, I'm ready to meet the sky-changers and see what they have to say. I'm ready to be a goblin in a human world, to find my place in the rust-weight of the city.
