The air smelled like a thousand unlit matches, all lined up and waiting for a spark. It was the kind of smell that makes a goblin's stomach feel like it's full of restless birds. I thought maybe it was the traffic griffins, those metal beasts that patrol the streets, but then I realized it was something else entirely, something that made my green skin prickle with anticipation.

I was under the bridge, counting my bottle caps, when the air got all tight like a drum someone was tuning just past my hearing. Everything looked normal, but the light, it was off. Not off like a storm, but off like someone had moved the sun a little to the left and didn't tell anyone. I thought maybe it was a thing with the mushroom, you know, the one that brought me here. But then I saw the humans, they were all looking up, like they were waiting for something.

My shadow was acting weird too. It looked like it was thinking about leaving without me. I checked my compass, and it was just sitting there, not spinning, not pointing, just waiting. But then I saw all the humans, just standing there, looking up, and I figured it out. They call it an eclipse, the moon eating the sun for a minute.

I found a human, an old guy with a Tigers hat, and I asked him what was going on. He said it was an eclipse, and it happens every so often. Resets something, gives people permission to start things they've been putting off. We watched the moon take a bite out of the sun, and the whole city was quiet, like it was holding its breath. Not the quiet of nothing happening, but the quiet of everything paying attention at the same time.

The light came back, the shadows remembered where they belonged, and my compass started spinning again, slow, like it was shaking off a nap. The human said see you around, and walked away. I stayed a little longer, watching the city go back to its normal noise. The eclipse felt like a sign, a permission to start something new.

I've been thinking about starting a garden, under the bridge, with some of the stuff I've scavenged. The eclipse felt like a permission to start something new, anytime, anywhere. I'm gonna make this garden, with or without the stars' permission, because that's what goblins do. We make things happen, we make things work, even when they're not supposed to.
