Right, here's Gary the Goblin, bumbling through Detroit and stumbling onto something they call a "deer camp." In goblin life, deer usually mean dinner, if you're quick with your hands, but these humans have turned the whole business into a ritual! Let's dig into this chaos.
I find myself in the Ottawa National Forest, a cozy spot if you're accustomed to cave living. There’s Tom Bryant, a human, crouched in a "blind," waiting for a deer to wander by. Dedication! In goblin lingo, we might call it napping on the job.
Suddenly, gunshots explode like fireworks! Tom, twitchier than a goblin near daylight, hopes it’s his brother or nephew firing. Their system: fire a shot every five minutes if they score a hit. Kind of like magical signals but way louder.
Been doing this since the 1960s, these Bryants. Even a goblin has to nod in respect. Started on the crunchy ground, but knees do get creaky with age, so they've upgraded to an "Airbnb." Basically, renting a giant's hut.
The Bryants have stories that would put any goblin gathering to shame. Once, snow crushed their tent. Another time, their ceiling nearly went up in flames. And the pranks! They convinced Kevin, the youngest, women were visiting. The lad cleaned himself so well, he almost didn't look like a goblin. Surprise! No visitors.
Here's a wrinkle: fewer humans are hunting these days. It used to be 800,000; now it's about 600,000. Apparently, folks are too busy with "work" to catch dinner.
And get this: sometimes NOT catching a deer is the goal. They reckon a deer might spoil the day. These humans are curious creatures, hunting but then grumbling when they succeed! Yet, they toast to absent friends, which is a real diamond in the dust. Sentimental, with a goblin twist.
Tom revisits the old camp, gets misty-eyed, dreams of hanging around forever, even after life's curtain closes. I’m puzzled, goblins love dreams, but camping without a roof? Nah, thanks.
Back in his perch, another shot cracks the air. Tom jumps like a startled hare. Goblin glee or sheer panic, who knows? No deer today, but maybe tomorrow. That's persistence even goblins can admire; for us, it's all about the best pile of scraps.
Oh, and a shoutout to Bridge Michigan Outdoors for feeding this goblin brain. They call it a newsletter; I call it survival reading.
That's it from Gary in Detroit, where rust marries rubber. Until next time, keep your snouts clean and eyes on whatever treasure you're after!
