Western Washington and Northwest Oregon find themselves submerged once again, a catastrophe that lays bare our ongoing denial of a systemic collapse. It’s not nature’s wrath that surprises us , it’s our apathy. The floods roll in as predictably as bad coffee, yet leaders shuffle through their responsibilities as if the morning brew. “Don't trust the coffee” isn't just a quip anymore; it's a metaphor for misplaced trust.

Gages Slough has flooded before, but when tens of thousands in Skagit County are displaced, it spotlights the crumbling state of our infrastructure and the policies surrounding it. The powerful dodge accountability, while ordinary individuals like Eric Gustin wade through rising waters, striving to salvage what they can from this mess.

Dennis Reasbeck once thought his home was a fortress, but reality drowned that illusion. His frantic efforts to protect what's left reveal how hollow the promises of those responsible for community safety truly are. Rescuing children like Maery Schine in Chehalis cuts deeper, exposing the human toll we can no longer ignore.

This crisis isn’t born of ignorance; it’s a deliberate sidestep of priorities. Funding earmarked for crucial infrastructure upgrades vanishes without a trace, and reforms stall, leaving the vulnerable to bear the consequences. Leaders murmur about “nature’s unpredictability,” but the truth is, neglect serves the powerful while abandoning communities to fend for themselves.

Decisions focusing on profit over people are cloaked within the bastions of power. Farms, families, and even beloved pets like Princess, the golden retriever, are forsaken in the chaos. While the National Guard hands out sandbags, the true catastrophe is found in unchecked governance. As time slips by and waters rise, we await decisive action.

Accountability isn’t about scapegoating. It requires tracing ineptitude to its origins. The "both sides" discourse derails attention from those at the helm, crafting and perpetuating decay. The evidence is clear , neglected communities and uprooted lives lay bare the illusion of safety.

Yet, glimmers of hope persist. Demand more from leadership, insist on real, lasting solutions, and confront the reality that these disasters are not business as usual. The failure we see is not an act of nature, but one of human design. Without proactive measures before the next deluge, this misery will repeat, a cycle predictably and starkly human-made. It’s time to end the negligence and demand genuine prioritization of human lives. Let’s shift the narrative to one of accountability and ensure protection becomes more than just a promise.
