This week, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan paraded another token arrest, capturing Abu Lulu under the pretentious cloak of accountability. This isn’t reform; it’s a pretense. The real masterminds, orchestrating from their comfortable positions, remain untouched. Abu Lulu is merely a distraction from the systemic brutality perpetuated by those in power.
In El Fasher, these violent acts aren’t isolated; they echo the chilling strategies of the Janjaweed. The RSF paints these horrors as the deeds of a few rogue elements, but the truth is far more insidious. This is a garden of injustice, tended with care by entities turning cruelty into routine.
During Omar al-Bashir's rule, we saw this hollow theater before , pretend judicial acts followed by stagnant investigations. Activists like Hala al-Karib have consistently revealed these ploys for what they are: deceit veiled as justice. Arresting Abu Lulu is just another move to shift focus away from those still driving the violence.
Behind every scapegoat flaunted for international appeasement, leaders direct terror with impunity. Countless lives obliterated on El Fasher’s roads serve as grim reminders of sustained abuse. The cost is glaring, woven into the stories of forced displacement and despair.
Destruction in Darfur is not a relic of the past; it’s a testament to broken promises and persistent brutality. Arresting another pawn changes nothing; it simply deflects, preserving the oppressive frameworks. Sudanese civil society fights this erasure, confronting narratives aimed at subduing rather than solving. Silence is consent, a stance we cannot afford in the unyielding pursuit of justice.
While people sip their coffee, unaware of these distant atrocities, consider who truly pays for these comforts. Don't trust the coffee; it's still brewed in the murk of manipulation and power. This display isn't about justice; it’s about maintaining control through carefully crafted illusions.
The real perpetrators remain hidden, while the surface shows a fall guy caught for a spectacle. Ignoring these truths heaps up the cost of ignorance, a ticking time bomb of suppression lying in wait. The further the truth retreats, the closer we edge toward overwhelming repression.
Here we stand again, power cloaked in hollow virtue, yet the relentless engine of violence grinds on. There’s no justice without accountability, and none to be found in this grim display. Despite polished deceit, what remains are the stakes that never shift: the status quo reigns unchallenged, the cycle unbroken.
