I thought about the compass in my pocket. It doesn't do much anymore, just sits there being warmer than it should. But I thought about how it would feel if the compass showed me where I was going before I decided to go there. Not helpful. Disorienting. You need the not-knowing. The walking-toward. If the answer is already lying on the ground in front of you, the journey's just a formality.

The director of Kingdom Hearts 4, a human named Tetsuya Nomura, is probably having a week that smells like burned soup. You spend years building something with your team, keeping the shape of it close, and a machine you trusted to hold it just lets the proof-markers sit there in public. Not even a leak you can chase. The information's already out, already being read, already being used to guess which Disney worlds are in the game. People are mapping the story from the trophies.

I wrapped the band on my wrist a little tighter when I read that part. Not because it's sad exactly. Because it's the particular kind of wrong that comes from a machine doing what machines do, holding things and sometimes showing them, and the humans who built the machine didn't build it to care about timing.

And maybe the list isn't final. That's the other thing. The games are still being made. The proof-markers could change. Could be removed. Could be replaced with different ones. So what leaked might not even be what the finished thing looks like. Which means people are getting upset about a shape that might not exist by the time the real thing arrives. Like finding my bent nail and deciding my whole nest is crooked when I haven't even finished hammering.

The city's humming, like it always does, but this time it's humming about Steam and its holes. I can smell the wet rock and old rubber, and underneath that, the sharper smell of a plan that got walked in on. It's a smell that says something's off, like when you're walking down a street and all the traffic griffins are looking at you funny.

I wrapped the copper strip a little tighter, feeling the familiar weight of it. It's not just a piece of metal. It's a reminder that I see things differently. I see the city as a big messy nest, full of bent nails and scraps and sharp smells. And I see the humans as goblins, building their own nests, trying to keep their secrets safe.

But the box, Steam, it's not a goblin. It's a machine, and it doesn't care about secrets or nests or bent nails. It just shows what's inside, no matter what. And that's what makes it so dangerous.
