I'm standing on the edge of something longer than their ship, and it reeks of wet rock mixed with metal left too long in the rain. Thought it was a dragon until I saw the wheels and realized it's just a bus, moving like some giant metal beast. The traffic griffins, those metal birds with license plate-eating eyes, they watch it too, their gazes a slow cold fire that freezes instead of burns.
Been walking for maybe 130 Tinnys nose to tail, compass in my pocket pulling me here. Don't know what this place is yet but it feels real, like fungus underneath a log. Alive if not pretty. The city's hum stutters like a heartbeat, and I'm trying to catch its rhythm, how everything locks in and moves together when it finds it.
Buildings rise up as I walk, looking like they were made from everything mixed together, churro wrappers and all. The air hangs heavy, smelling like damp pages keeping secrets. I can feel the rust-weight of all the stories that have happened here. Enough to make a goblin feel like he's found something true hiding beneath something pretending to be false.
See people with faces as complicated as maps, trying to find where they fit in a world drawn by machines. They ask questions, state intentions, leave small desperate notes. The city's attention is like a machine that answers questions people never knew they had. I'm trying to read it, smell out its pattern.
I wrap my copper strip tighter when I need to be seen, need to make someone listen. It's my tool for making sense of things, for understanding the city's anger that smells like bad decisions and hiding under old socks.
As I walk I notice things. A bus getting eaten by a griffin. A door propped open by a brick. The city's trying to tell me something in water and meat and I'm trying to learn its shape, the kind of teaching that doesn't happen in schools.
The mushroom's still spinning my head but I'm following the thread, feeling where it pulls. Round and round like a clock face that bends time. Following the scent of a hundred questions nobody asked.
Just a three-foot goblin who sleeps under bridges, finding his way by a trail of unasked questions.
