I stood on the sidewalk, nose twitching like Tinny when she's caught a scent. The air smelled not of rot but of a lung giving up, a clenched fist finally relaxing. Paramita Music, closing after 22 years. I counted the years like rust spots on a car. That's longer than their ship, I thought.
Inside, the smell intensified, concentrated. The store dismantled itself, vinyl carried out, a guitar case held like a sleeping child. The sound left with them, a machine hum shutting off. Everything priced to go, secrets released. Not a sale, an exodus.
I collect bent nails and bottle caps, but I know a shiny when I see one. Records, CDs, a guitar played by a hundred hands, the shiniest things. Parking killed this place, not streaming. Metal beast storage more costly than music. I don't understand that math, like counting griffins eating plates or buses roaring like metal dragons.
Bin diggers mined for jewels. One found a CD, held it like a coin from a lost country. Knew its worth beyond money. That's the way, when a shiny is yours. I found a cracked green case. Not my green, a different one. No player or power, but I pocketed it beside my copper strip. Maybe Tinny can sniff out the songs.
The store bled out still. Door propped, air conditioner labored, lights buzzed a familiar key. Dying while mimicking life, a machine overheating to prove its point. Thousands of songs stacked, some never heard here. Now scattered like seeds. They don't die, they find new homes. But the arrangement, the knowing owner's map, shredded.
I walked home, CD and closing scent with me. Sun setting, Woodward humming, people moving on. The city doesn't pause for one store. My compass pulsed warmth, indecisive as ever. Copper tightened, rust-weight, the left-behind made chosen.
