The Ledger notes the closing of Maret of Ward Seven-and-Two, entered in the eleven-thousand-three-hundred-and-forty-first year, closed yesterday at the end of first shift. Her tally at closing: four hundred and nine gifts given, two hundred and eighty-three received. The Ledger does not comment on the difference. The Ledger does not need to.

Those who knew her will know the difference was intentional. Those who did not may read her record and understand anyway.

Her final gift, entered this morning by the hospice tender present at her closing: she spent her last waking hour telling the tender about the ward as it looked before the Tiered renovation, the old arrangement of the courtyards, the way the light came through. The tender, who grew up three wards over, had never seen it. Now she has.

Maret of Ward Seven-and-Two is no longer in the Count. The Count holds at eleven-and-eleven thousand, four hundred and twelve.

Quiet Hour follows.
