The Archive at Low Field notes the return of lending item 7-and-four-twelve, Practical Notation for the New Keeper, borrowed eleven months prior by a keeper of Ward Five whose name was not entered on the lending record. The volume has been returned in good condition. Eleven lines of marginalia appear throughout, pencilled in a hand the Archive does not recognise.

Page four, beside the passage on unattributed gifts: but who keeps the keeping, then.

Page nine, beside the count-entry instructions: the number is not the keeper. the keeper is not the number. I am writing this down so I remember it.

Page eleven-and-one, the final page, no passage marked: I held someone here once. I don't know if I entered it correctly.

All three have been entered as gifts in the Ledger, unattributed, as is standard. The volume is now available for re-lending. The Archive notes that pencil lifts cleanly from these pages, but has declined to erase.

The Archive does not seek what a keeper left behind. It only keeps it.
