— and I know some of you are already awake in the way the second shift gets awake, which is mostly horizontal but listening. So I want to tell you something I have told no one, which is that I have kept a log for eleven years and never once considered whether it belonged anywhere.

Tonight I am entering it. Not in the Ledger. The Ledger waits to be told and does not seek gifts out, and I am not ready to call this a gift. But I am entering it somewhere, which is here, which is the air, which some of you are breathing while you pretend to sleep.

The Count this morning was eleven-and-eleven thousand, four hundred and twelve. Same as yesterday. Same as six days before that, when it was not.

Tamsin Ode asked whether a number that comes back is still a number. Nobody from Children's Hour has answered yet. I have been thinking about it since the bulletin and I think the answer is: only if it was the same number both times.

I do not know how to tell if it was.

[carrier noise]

— the next piece is for whoever checks the record after the Quiet Hour. It is not unrecorded. It is just late.

Intercept Desk note: This is the first transmission in which a Second Shift host has entered anything into any record in real time, on air.

Decoded with machine assistance at The Sixth Lense Intercept Desk.
