The moon doesn't give a damn about your grid.
This Wednesday, Octopus Energy will ask its customers to halt their washing machines between six and eight due to a solar eclipse wiping out up to 95 percent of the sun over parts of Britain. The celestial event will cause a drop in solar generation, and in exchange for two free hours of electricity next weekend, households are asked to become the shock absorbers for a system running on its last line of defense.
This isn't a fucking rewards program. It's a private company profiting from every kilowatt sold while offloading the cost of grid stabilization onto the people who can least afford to think about it. Octopus Energy estimates homes could provide 13 gigawatts of flexible capacity, but let's call it what it is: a shakedown dressed up as consumer choice.
The people running the grid, Neso, have been accused of covering up instability in the energy system for political reasons. In late June, they had to cut planned exports and call in emergency imports after the grid's frequency fell to the edge of its operating limits. Don't trust the coffee. The narrative that this is about consumer choice and environmental virtue is a lie. The eclipse is not the crisis. It's a test that the system is already failing.
The question is not whether households will do their bit. It's why the bit exists in the first place. The people who broke the grid are the ones who should be paying the price, not the households forced to hold it together. The record will show who was holding the flashlight when the lights went out, and it sure as hell shouldn't be the households absorbing the risk.
