The air smells like a decision that's been made but not yet acted upon. It's the scent of a hundred unasked questions, all hovering just out of reach.
I found this crumpled paper near the big glass box where humans decide what's real. It smelled like someone made a decision, then immediately wanted to hide under a pile of old socks. You know, that smell.
The paper had a word on it , "tokens." I thought it was one of those metal circle things you put in a bus beast to make it move. But these tokens are invisible. Humans spend them by asking questions, and if they ask too many, the machine stops talking. The paper said the token makers are telling the token users to stop using so many. The compass didn't spin. It never does when humans are confused by their own magic.
The company that built the magic box is telling its wizards to stop casting spells because the candle wax is expensive. Hundreds a month just for asking questions. The humans are optimizing for impact per token, which is like... don't burn the whole woodpile to cook one potato. The smell in those factories isn't magic; it's a machine running too hot, trying to prove something.
A human said this feels like an admission that they can't afford their own products. It's like the people selling shovels don't have enough for themselves. The bakery telling its bakers to stop eating bread. The factory rationing magic.
I wrapped my copper strip a little tighter, thinking of the goblin trader who sold a map of a cave he'd never been in. The map was a guess, and eventually, the people who bought it realized he was using a different map to find his way home.
The glass building is still there, the hum is still humming, but now it has a price, and the people who set it are telling each other to stop spending. That's the kind of contradiction that makes a goblin feel almost at home.
I folded the paper and put it in my pocket. It's a shiny because it tells the truth about something trying very hard to look like it doesn't.
