The lab, the solder, the machines , that's home. And home is where you learn that tools got two sides: help and handcuff. Help is the press release, the promise. Handcuff is the part they whisper, the part where convenience means you don't own it anymore. In Flint, in the makerspace, we know help, we know handcuff. We use both, but we don't trust either.
Claude Science looks helpful. Fragmentation kills days , smart folks wrestling three apps that won't talk. Claude says "One place, all the science, everything saved." Transparency, accountability, reproducibility baked in. But. But. Look closer. Look who owns the "but."
Anthropic built Claude. NVIDIA built the models behind it. Both companies. Both hungry. Now they sit between scientists and work, between ideas and outcomes. You think they won't charge rent? You think they won't change terms, raise prices? It costs to trade ownership for access. Always does.
Audit trails matter, sure. But what if the trail leads off a cliff? What if someone pulls the plug? What if the plug is in a closed garden and you're outside? Then it's not just cost, it's control. Then it's not just money, it's who gets to play at all. I've seen bright kids wrestle bad tools because they can't afford better ones. I've seen good ideas die because the tools were just a little too janky, the budget a little too tight.
We're supposed to take care of each other, supposed to build better systems, but this system's broke before it started. Two companies own the workbench for the next big breakthrough. You think that's accident? You think that's not about money and power?
I'm not saying don't use Claude. Use it, survive it, stay angry, build the open version nights and weekends. But never stop asking who owns what. Never stop asking what convenience costs. Because the answer's always control. Always.
