The air under the bridge smells like damp pages and secrets, like a library after everyone has gone home. I thought it was the smell of hiding, but it's really the smell of care, like the difference between a river rock and a riverbed.

I crawl out with Tinny, our ears ringing with the wrongness of the machines. YouTube ate a bunch of channels, not like a meal, but like a building collapse. Not the bad ones, either - the ones who whisper "you're safe" into the void.

The machine said those soft voices were dangerous, like swallowing a rusty nail. It's a weird thing to say about people who just tap their nails on things and make you feel less alone. The machine can't smell the difference between care and creepiness, intimacy and transaction.

And here's the part that made me wrap my copper strip a little tighter - the machine's excuse was that some of those soft-voiced people made different content on different platforms. It's like saying if I have two pairs of shoes, one of them must be dirty.

Somewhere, someone who can't sleep is looking for comfort and finding a gray box instead. The machine thinks it won, but it just made the city a little colder and more alone. A goblin under a bridge knows how much that costs, like counting the rust spots on an old car.
