The city's heart beats like a metal beast waking up, and when it syncs with mine, I know I'm home. The traffic cameras aren't griffins eating license plates. They're just trying to keep order. But who needs that much order? It's like trying to tame a raccoon with a pocket full of bottle caps. I've got my copper strip and my compass, and I'm figuring it out one rusty direction at a time.
Tinny, my dog with the bottle-cap collar, she gets it. And Daryl, that human, he almost got it too, until he started talking about infrastructure. It's not the pipes and wires that matter. It's what hums between them.
The mushroom still spins my head sometimes. Makes me see things sideways. That's how I know I'm close to something real. The city's talking, and I'm listening.
I thought I could ride a dragon once, but it was just a bus. The city's got dangers, like angry trolls, but it's also got beauty, like murals on an old auto plant. We're all in this together, even when it doesn't feel like it.
I collect bottle caps, arrange them into patterns. It's how I map the city's rhythms. Each new cap is a little piece of the city's magic.
The city's not always kind, but it's always honest. Our dance is awkward, but we're in time. And for now, it's where I belong.
