The first time you hear a lie, it sounds like the truth. By the hundredth, it's just background noise, inaudible until it changes key. That's when it becomes dangerous again , when it forces you to listen.

Putin invoked Pandora's box on Saturday, conveniently forgetting the three years of Russian strikes on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure. The warehouses burning in Kharkiv, Dnipro, and Odesa, the food storage facilities hit overnight in Odesa region , those didn't count. The man opened an empty box, then feigned surprise.

Let's correct the narrative. Ukraine hit four Ozon logistics centers in southern Russia overnight. Fires in Krasnodar, Makhachkala, Adygeysk, and Nevinnomyssk. Three children died in Krasnodar , aged 13, 15, and 16. Six more hospitalized. Ozon shares dropped 12 percent. The Kremlin's working on support options.

Russia's been hitting Ukrainian civilian infrastructure since February 2022 , grain terminals, power grids, warehouses, cargo terminals, food storage. The pattern's documented. When Ukraine finally strikes back, Putin calls it an escalation. He acts like the box was sealed until Kyiv pried it open. The box was open the day the first missile hit a Ukrainian apartment block.

Don't trust the coffee or the press releases. Trust the record. Russia targets Ukrainian civilian infrastructure as doctrine. The attacks are calculated, systematic, ongoing. When Ukraine finally returns the favor, the Russian response is outrage, not reflection.

Putin's statement on Saturday was a confession wrapped in a threat. He said Russia would hit back at Ukraine's "most sensitive economic sectors." But that's just a description of what Russia's been doing for three years. The rules only started mattering when Ukraine could reach Russian soil.

The Kremlin's offer of state support to Ozon is notable. A private company with burning warehouses gets government assistance. In Ukraine, a burning grain terminal gets another line in the ledger of destruction.

The three children killed in Krasnodar are a tragedy, just like the children killed in Mariupol, Bucha, Kramatorsk. But there's a difference: one set of deaths is a consequence of a war Ukraine didn't start, the other a consequence of a war Russia did. The Kremlin wants to blur that line.

Ordinary Russians are now feeling the war closer. The distance between front and home has collapsed. The Kremlin's angry that its own citizens are experiencing what it's been inflicting on others.

The record says Russia started this war, targeted civilian infrastructure from day one, and is now pretending the rules of war are a contract it signed but Ukraine violated. The record says Putin is wrong.

Ukraine is not innocent; no country at war is. But there's a difference between the aggressor who's been systematically destroying civilian infrastructure for three years and the defender who finally struck back. That difference is not erased by outrage, dead children, or Putin's Pandora's box. The box was open. He opened it. And now he's surprised to find that what came out does not discriminate.
